My Body Care Routine: Prioritizing Clean Beauty and Eliminating Toxins
10/11/20243 min read
Over the years, I’ve become increasingly conscious about what I put in and on my body. Whether it’s through my diet or skincare products, I’ve made it a priority to reduce exposure to toxins and harmful chemicals. In the past, I used whatever products were cheapest and most accessible to me at that time, without much thought about their ingredients. But as I’ve learned more about how much our skin absorbs, I’ve shifted to a cleaner, more intentional approach to self-care.
Here’s a glimpse into my skincare routine and the products I love for their clean ingredients and effectiveness.
Face Care: Cleanser & Sunscreen
I keep my skincare routine relatively simple and always look for products that are both effective and gentle.
TULA Skin Care Supersize Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser and Beauty by Earth Facial Cleanser Face Wash are two favorites of mine. Both cleansers leave my skin feeling refreshed and clean without stripping away natural oils. TULA’s cleanser is packed with probiotics and superfoods, while Beauty by Earth uses natural ingredients like aloe vera and green tea. I love how smooth and balanced my skin feels after using them.
Pipette Mineral Sunscreen - SPF 50 is my go-to for daytime sun protection. It offers excellent coverage without clogging my pores or leaving a white cast. Plus, it’s free from harmful chemicals commonly found in other sunscreens, which aligns perfectly with my goal to avoid toxins.
Nighttime Oils
At night, I like to use a variety of oils to deeply nourish my skin. Oils offer hydration and help improve my skin’s texture over time. My current favorites (with links to my favorite brands!) include:
Vitamin C Oil for brightening and evening out skin tone
Rosehip Seed Oil for its anti-aging benefits
Jojoba Oil for balancing moisture levels
Vitamin E Oil for healing and hydration
Lavender Oil and Tea Tree Oil to soothe inflammation and prevent breakouts
I always make sure to dilute the essential oils with a carrier oil to avoid irritation and ensure they're gentle on my skin.
I rotate these oils based on how my skin feels, and since I started using them, my skin looks softer and more glowing when I wake up. Incorporating oils into my routine has allowed me to simplify my regimen while still getting the hydration my skin needs.
Deodorant & Hair Care: Clean and Effective
Finding a natural deodorant that works took time. Some natural deodorants left me with an awful smell by the end of the day, and others caused me to break out into severe rashes. It was frustrating, but after a lot of trial and error, I finally found Hello Deodorant, which has been a game-changer. It’s free from aluminum and parabens, keeps me feeling fresh all day, and doesn’t irritate my skin—so it’s a win all around.
For my hair, I use Renpure Shampoo and Conditioners, which are sulfate-free and full of plant-based ingredients, and some key styling products:
L'Anza Healing Strength Neem Plant Silk Serum gives my hair a smooth, silky finish without feeling greasy.
Aluram Smoothing Cream helps tame frizz and keeps my hair looking sleek, especially in humid conditions.
Still Searching for the Perfect Lip Balm
One area I’m still working on is finding a natural lip balm that works for me. Unfortunately, I seem to be allergic to either beeswax or sunflower oil—two ingredients in most natural lip balms—so I often have bad reactions. I’m still on the hunt for a balm that’s free of those ingredients but still hydrating.
Makeup: A Minimal Approach
These days, I take a minimal approach to makeup. In my 20s and 30s, I used to wear a lot more, but now I find that going makeup-free most days has helped my skin stay clearer. On special occasions, I’ll use a bit of concealer if I have a blemish and some mascara if I’m going somewhere nice, but, for the most part, I’ve embraced a more natural look.
My Clean Beauty Journey
Focusing on clean beauty has been a game-changer for my skin and overall well-being. By eliminating toxins from my skincare routine, I’ve seen a big difference—not only in how my skin looks and feels, but also in how I feel knowing that I’m avoiding harmful chemicals. While I’m still exploring and refining parts of my routine (like finding the perfect lip balm), I’m excited about the journey toward healthier, toxin-free skincare.
